Julie Ries is a graduate of Yale and the MFA program at NYU, where she taught expository and creative writing. Her first novel, The Hunger Bride, follows the stories of two extraordinary women in early twentieth-century San Francisco—a brilliant Chinese peasant girl sold into prostitution and the scandalous American missionary who befriends her.

Inspired by actual historical figures, the book draws on elements of the medical mystery, Gothic tale, Victorian thriller, and traditional Chinese ghost story.

The first chapter of The Hunger Bride, featured in Guernica magazine, can be seen here.
